Update to National Translation Awards in Poetry and Prose

Update to National Translation Awards in Poetry and Prose

January 12, 2023–The American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) is delighted to announce that thanks to a generous gift from an ALTA member, the prize amounts offered to the winners of the National Translation Awards in Poetry and Prose, previously $2,500 each, has been increased to $4,000 each.

The National Translation Awards (NTA) in Poetry and Prose are awarded annually to literary translators who have made an outstanding contribution to literature in English by masterfully recreating the artistic force of a book of consummate quality. Established in 1998, the NTA is the only prize for a work of literary translation into English to include a full evaluation of the source language text. 2015 was the first year in which the NTA was awarded separately in poetry and prose, when the original prize amount of $5,000 was split evenly into $2,500 for each award.

Starting with the 2023 awards cycle, ALTA will award $4,000 each to the winners of the NTA in Prose and the NTA in Poetry. The 2023 winners of the NTA will be announced along with the winners of the Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize, Italian Prose in Translation Award, and the Spain-USA Foundation Translation Award at the ALTA46 conference, which will be held in Tucson, AZ in early November.

By increasing the award amounts conferred on the winners of the National Translation Awards in Poetry and Prose, ALTA is proud to recognize the skill and labor of literary translators and reward excellence in literary translation.

Submissions to the 2023 National Translation Awards, along with the other prizes ALTA offers, will open via Submittable on January 17, 2023.
