ALTA’s AWP23 Translation Roundup

ALTA’s AWP23 Translation Roundup

ALTA is going to the Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) conference! The AWP23 conference will take place March 8-11, in Seattle, WA.

Find ALTA at booth 918 in the bookfair. Join us there to talk translation, snag some ALTA swag, and participate in Bookfair Bingo, your chance to win a bundle of recently published titles in translation. Just fill out your Bingo card by visiting participating publishers at their booths, and you’ll be entered into a raffle to win a number of books in translation. Visit us at our booth to learn more!

As part of our literary partnership with AWP, ALTA is excited to sponsor five panels at AWP23:

  • On Errors: Reconsidering Accuracy & Authenticity in Translation
  • What Presses and Journals Need to Know About Publishing Literary Translations
  • “Across”: One Poem in a Thousand Voices: Comparative Perspectives in Translation
  • Translation 101: How to Become a Translator
  • Translating the Poetry of Urgency

Follow this link to find out more about these panels. And visit this page for a full list of translation-related events at AWP23.

Be sure to check out the Offsite Translator Meetup: Party with the Northwest Literary Translators on Thursday, March 9, 5:30–7:30pm at Solo Bar & Eatery! All translators and friends of translators are invited to celebrate with Seattle’s literary translation community. There will be select readings by local translators, delicious free food, and drinks for purchase. Masks are appreciated but not required. For more information, contact organizers Shelley Fairweather-Vega and Gabriella Page-Fort at translation@fairvega.com. Find this and other offsite events here

Member Books on Display at AWP23: ALTA will happily display recent books translated by ALTA members at our booth (918). There is a maximum of 3 titles per member. ALTA staff cannot transport books to AWP, so members must bring them in person to our booth. Books are for display only; ALTA cannot handle any sales at AWP. Books must be dropped off no later than 10:00am on the first day of the bookfair (Thursday, March 9) and picked up no later than 4:00pm on the last day (Saturday, March 11). Unclaimed books will be donated. We look forward to showing off your work!

Plus: Looking to get involved? Join ALTA’s AWP Subcommittee! AWP Subcommittee members work together to plan ALTA’s panels and presence at AWP.
