Greenfield Review Press The Greenfield Review Press published its first book, a collection of inmate poems smuggled out of Soledad Prison, in 1971. Since then, our press has been a home for a great diversity of voices, including but not limited to African, African American, Arab American, Asian American, American Indian, Caribbean and Chicano poets and fiction writers. We were a multicultural publisher before the term gained wide currency, although we define "multicultural" as inclusive of all cultures not just those neglected in the past.

Brooding Heron Press We have been publishing letterpress books of poetry since 1982 (books by Gary Snyder, Denise Levertov, James Laughlin, Hayden Carruth, Donald Hall, John Haines, Pattiann Rogers, etc.). We live on an isolated island off the Washington coast in a log house we built ourselves. We have a C&P, a small Vandercook proof press, a little tabletop Adana, and a large flatbed Challenge. Besides the print shop (which occupies a third of the main floor of the house), we have a bookbindery complete with Challenge paper cutter, a floor model board shears, and two nipping presses. We’ve been off the grid for 29 years. What power we have comes from solar panels. Sally is the printer; Sam (who also served as the inaugural poet laureate of Washington) is the resident bookbinder.

Asymptote Journal Asymptote is an exciting new international journal dedicated to literary translation and bringing together in one place the best in contemporary writing. We are interested in encounters between languages and the consequences of these encounters. Though a translation may never fully replicate the original in effect (thus our name, “asymptote”: the dotted line on a graph that a mathematical function may tend towards but never reach), it is in itself an act of creation.

Mayapple Press Mayapple Press is a highly-selective small press established in 1978 by poet and editor Judith Kerman. We focus on literature not often celebrated by either the mainstream or the avant-garde. This includes poetry which is both challenging and accessible; women’s writing; the rustbelt/rural culture that stretches from the Hudson Valley to the Great Lakes; the recent immigrant experience; poetry in translation; science fiction poetry. We also welcome poetry anthologies, short fiction and science fiction poetry. Publications are in trade paperback formats (30-120 pages). In general, we publish only authors with prior publications with reputable presses or literary magazines. We do not publish books which have been previously self-published, although parts of a longer poetry collection may have appeared in privately-printed chapbooks.

Brooklyn Arts Press Brooklyn Arts Press (BAP) is an independent house devoted to publishing poetry books, lyrical fiction, short fiction, novels, chapbooks, art monographs, essays, translations, & nonfiction by emerging artists. We believe we serve our community best by publishing great works of varying aesthetics side by side, subverting the notion that writers & artists exist in vacuums, apart from the culture in which they reside and outside the realm & understanding of other camps & aesthetics. We believe experimentation & innovation, arriving by way of given forms or new ones, make our culture greater through diversity of perspective, opinion, expression, & spirit.

West End Press The idea of people’s culture has a long and colorful history in the United States. Some of it originated in poetry and song—including the works of Walt Whitman and Carl Sandburg. The Industrial Workers of the World (I.W.W. or “Wobblies”) carried culture around the country as they “rode the rails.” American populism emerged from farmer-labor politics of the Middle West in the early 20th century. Novels such as The Grapes of Wrath grew out of the Great Depression in the 1930s. Later came the People’s Songs movement, with Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Paul Robeson. West End Press formed in 1976 with the support of Meridel Le Sueur, one of the leading figures in the people’s culture movement from the 1930s. She believed that an alliance of working people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds represented the hope of America. Her stories and novels, full of distinctly human gestures and deeds, reflected the aspirations of the American underclass as the true genius of the nation. Our task, she believed, was to represent these voices.

Princeton University Press Princeton University Press is an independent publisher with close connections, both formal and informal, to Princeton University. As such it has overlapping responsibilities to the University, the academic community, and the reading public. Our fundamental mission is to disseminate scholarship (through print and digital media) both within academia and to society at large. We select for publication only scholarship of the highest quality on all levels regardless of commercial viability: specialized monographs making an original contribution to knowledge within a subdiscipline; titles appealing to a broader range of scholars and professionals in a single discipline; interdisciplinary academic works intended for readers in more than one subject area; and works by scholars aimed at bringing the findings of a discipline to the larger, well-educated reading public. Some titles from all these categories are also eventually used in the classroom as supplemental course reading. We also publish texts specifically intended for student use at the graduate and undergraduate level. We seek to publish the innovative works of the greatest minds in academia, from the most respected senior scholar to the extraordinarily promising graduate student, in each of the disciplines in which we publish. The Press consciously acquires a collection of titles--a coherent "list" of books--in each discipline, providing focus, continuity, and a basis for the development of future publications. Through the publication of works of scholarly significance, Princeton University Press fulfills part of the mission of Princeton University by furthering its fundamental commitment to the dissemination of knowledge.

Monthly Review Press In May 1949 Monthly Review began publication in New York City, as cold war hysteria gathered force in the United States. The first issue featured the lead article Why Socialism? by Albert Einstein. From the first Monthly Review spoke for socialism and against U.S. imperialism, and is still doing so today. From the first Monthly Review was independent of all political organization, and is still so today. The McCarthy era inquisition targeted Monthly Review's original editors Paul Sweezy and Leo Huberman, who fought back successfully. In the subsequent global upsurge against capitalism, imperialism and the commodification of life (in shorthand “1968”) Monthly Review played a global role. A generation of activists received no small part of their education as subscribers to the magazine and readers of Monthly Review Press books. In the intervening years of counter-revolution, Monthly Review has kept a steady viewpoint. That point of view is the heartfelt attempt to frame the issues of the day with one set of interests foremost in mind: those of the great majority of humankind, the propertyless.

University of Rochester Press Founded in 1989 as a unique collaboration between the University of Rochester and British academic publisher Boydell & Brewer, Ltd., the University of Rochester Press publishes books of high intellectual merit that reflect selected strengths of the university and contribute to scholarly dialogue in specific subject areas. The press sees as its mission the dissemination of scholarship to the academic community and to thoughtful general readers, particularly in the fields of musicology and music theory, African studies, European history, and the history of medicine. All manuscripts chosen for consideration by the press are rigorously peer-reviewed and brought before its editorial board for approval. We acquire and select projects—specialized monographs and contributed volumes—that fortify our established series, and that add meaningfully to the store of knowledge in these and related disciplines.

Cinco Puntos We are a small, very independent publishing compall rooted here in El Paso, Texas, not three miles north of the U.S. Mexican Border. We are both writers. We started Cinco Puntos because we wanted more time to write and we found as we have moved further and further into the publishing life, that publishing, like writing, is an act of self-discovery. Every book takes us to a new place. Each book leads us into unexpected intellectual terrains. These are places we might have never experienced without the provocation of new books and the business of making and selling them.

Upper Rubber Boot Books In Canadian vernacular, Upper Rubber Boot is slang for a remote, possibly unhip, probably insignificant place, much like America’s Podunk. Upper Rubber Boot Books was founded in July 2011 to give a voice to writers working from a (metaphorically) remote place, and to that end we publish fine literary and speculative writing, with a special focus on poetry and short story collections, genres which have a particularly difficult time finding a home in the publishing world. Some of our editions are available as ebooks only, while others are available as ebooks and print editions.
