Membership Meeting on January 31, 2021

ALTA members, one and all, come to this year’s general membership meeting to hear about the organization's developments and initiatives, have the opportunity to provide feedback and be heard, and vote on ALTA's revised Certificate of Formation (read this statement about the Certificate of Formation from the ALTA Executive Committee)! Register here for the meeting on Sunday, January 31, 2021, from 12:00-1:15pm ET.

Please note that you must have an active ALTA membership (for 2021) in order to attend the meeting, and have an active membership as of January 18, 2021 in order to vote on the Certificate of Formation. Please direct any questions to the ALTA office.

The 2020 Winner of the National Translation Award in Prose

The winner of the 2020 National Translation Award in Prose is:

The Cheffe: A Cook’s Novel by Marie NDiaye, translated from French by Jordan Stump (Alfred A. Knopf)!

The 2020 Winner of the Italian Prose in Translation Award

The winner of the 2020 Italian Prose in Translation Award is:

I Am God by Giacomo Sartori, translated from the Italian by Frederika Randall (Restless Books)

ALTA is honored to posthumously award this prize to Frederika Randall. Follow this link to watch the announcement of this year's winner, followed by a reading and a statement from Tommaso Jucker, Frederika Randall's son. This year’s judges were Jeanne Bonner, Richard Dixon, and Antony Shugaar.

Announcing the 2020 Virtual Travel Fellows

The winners of the 2020 Virtual Travel Fellowships, including the fifth annual Peter K. Jansen Memorial Travel Fellowship, are here! Normally there are 4-6 $1,000 fellowships to bring emerging (unpublished or minimally-published) translators to the ALTA conference. With the shift to a virtual conference this year, there are instead nine $500 fellowships, including two Peter K. Jansen Memorial Fellowships, to celebrate this year’s Virtual Travel Fellows at ALTA43.

ALTA celebrates this year’s Virtual Travel Fellows with a downloadable audio chapbook of the Fellows reading from their translations, introduced by 2009 Travel Fellow Robin Myers. This audio chapbook was released on Thursday, October 8 on ALTA’s Soundcloud page. This year’s winners were selected by judges David Ball, Bonnie Chau, and Tenzin Dickie.
